Special Issue on Lugu Lake, China
Lugu Lake is a plateau lake between Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces in northern China. The famous anthropologist and botanist, Joseph Rock, spent much time in this region and made Lugu Lake famous worldwide. At present, the region has seen little human disturbance and has some well preserved cultural and natural features, as well as the unique matriachal culture of the Mosuo who live in scattered lakeside villages. Recently, tourism and the economy have been developing rapidly. These developments have had a substantial influence on local communities, the natural environment and the Mosuo culture, and have led to concerns in terms of the future development of the region. The research areas covered in this Special Issue include: (1) the relationship between community development and local ecology in terms of Mosuo traditional culture for protecting the environment; (2) environmental and social change; (3) protection and sustainable utilisation of biological diversity; (4) Mosuo women, children and community sustainable development; and (5) anthropological research into the matriarchal culture. The objectives are to provide sustainable development strategies for this special region and to find a scientific way to retain the balance between the environment, tourism development and protection and development of the Mosuo traditional culture.
